NFL Season starts TODAY

The 2009 Super Bowl winners are up against the reigning world champs… who will win in this head to head battle?

Michael Vick and a case of the Mondays

So I’m Skyping with my boyfriend this evening {sorry boys… happily taken}, and I’m telling him about my day and everything is going fine…

Well, let me fill you in a little bit about Mr. JBR. He is a DIE HARD Hokie fan {Class of ’05 woop woop!} and thus accompanying his die hard-ness is his fandom of none other than the infamous Michael Dwayne Vick. I hate Vick… like with a passion {oops so much for objectivity… *sighs* I swear I have a point coming soon…}. I mean at first my distaste for him was mostly because of the dog fighting but then the fact that he plays for Philly as well just does is it for me, so incredibly long story short, Mr. Vick has a tenancy to come in between my man and me.

Anyways, I was telling him about my day and how in my class a fellow classmate, BB, had written this investigative article about Vick and how much of a… uhh… not nice person he can tend to be. Well I thought this was just great, I cannot wait to get my hands on that story! So I tell BR about this and he says “oh, I’ve hung out with him, I know that already.” To say the least, I was appalled at this reaction. I expected him to be a little more shocked, but no, his only defense for his easy reaction was “he’s a human too.” Really? No. If I had a sponsorship deal with an airline that paid me in free flights whenever I want, I sure as heck would not be sitting around making a flight late so I can eat a sandwich. That is not normal human behavior. If I tried to do that on an airplane right now either A. a stewardess {*ahem* “flight attendant”} would insist upon me discarding of my tasty lunch or B. I would get kicked off. And another thing, I have a little bit more respect for the people around me that even if I could get away with that, I wouldn’t do it anyways!

But it really got me thinking, why aren’t players like Mike Vick, and so many others, taking their roles as public figures and role models to so many aspiring athletes more seriously? And why, as fans, are we allowing them to get away with this? It honestly truly disappoints me when I hear professional athletes acting like such divas. Yes, I understand that Vick did {in the words of BR} “paid his debt to society” but did he pay is debt to his fans? Again, you can argue that he was going around doing these appearances speaking out against the cruelties and inhumanity of dog fighting, but is what he saying genuine or was it all just his PR rep playing ventriloquist, kissing the boo-boo’s and making it all better? Professional athletes have an image to uphold and it really seems like these days that many of them are not accepting that obligation. I keep thinking to myself {as I’m quickly growing older}, what do I do when my kid starts looking up to someone like Vick? Do I sit him down and explain to him, honestly, what Vick has done or do I let him live in ignorant bliss?

Going back to my boyfriend, I can’t seem to understand {and probably never will} how he can think so much of Vick. His argument is that he is great on the field {yes, true… but he plays for the Eagles} but how can you excuse him for his abuse of power?

what exactly IS “something, something?”

Well {besides an “UNDER CONSTRUCTION” mess}, simply put, “something, something” is a fill-in for I’m not too sure what… less-simply put “something, something” is a place to break ground… Break ground into the sports blogging world. Yes, readers-who-happen-to-stumble-across-this-lame-page, this is my first official, professional{ish} blog {well aside from those blogs we all have wining about our terribly unbearable lives at the age of 13}.

As a sports journalist graduate student at Indianapolis University-Purdue University Indianapolis {or, as it is more well-known as, IUPUI (pronounced oo-ee poo-ee)} I feel that this is my first step into breaking out into the world of digital sports. I can’t really guarantee that this blog will make me incredibly famous or reliable {if only…} but I hope it will at least be something to post on the resume and that my family and friends can claim bragging rights to {Dear friends and family, please brag and share this link… -E}.

So while you may have never intended to find this site, and may never plan on visiting it again as this is all I have and it has NOTHING to do with sports right now… I hope that you will occasionally think of poor ol’ me over here and check back… I promise once the NFL season gets going I’ll have something more substantial to say!
